God is the joy and glory in our mundane.
A Hymn of Praise
1 And in that day you will say:
“O Lord, I will praise You;
Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.
2 Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid
‘For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song;
He has become my salvation.’’
3 Therefore with joy you will draw water
From the wells of salvation.
4 And in that day you will say:
“Praise the Lord, call upon His name;
Declare His deeds among the peoples,
Make mention that His name is exalted.
5 Sing to the Lord,
For He has done excellent things;
This is known in all the earth.
6 Cry out and shout, O inhabitant of Zion,
For great is the Holy One of Israel in your midst!” Isaiah 12:1-6
Truly Lord, You have done excellent things in our midst.
You saved our souls from eternal condemnation;
You delight to walk with Your creation;
You came and lived with Your creation while we were still in full blown rebellion against you.
You loved/love us time and time again when there was/is nothing worth loving about us.
And each day Lord, each day You extend new mercies towards us.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul.
“Therefore I hope in Him!”
The Lord is good to those who wait for Him,
To the soul who Him.
It is good that one should hope and wait quietly
For the salvation of the Lord.
It is good for a man to bear
The yoke of his youth.
Let him sit alone and keep silent,
Because God has laid it on him,” Lamentations 3: 22-28
I will be the first one to admit that I have doubted God Sovereignty when my days, months, or seasons have been barren. Isn’t God the God of light, why do I walk in darkness? Why do I still have to walk in darkness? Because this earth and our flesh are passing away and giving way to His eternal purpose, giving way to His eternal redemptive story. God is God in my dark moments as much as He is God in my heartfelt joyful moments. God is God in my sleep as much as He is God in my waking hours. God is God while I still have breath in my lungs and He will be as much God when my body sleeps while waiting to be resurrected.
God of all your days
“Each step I take
You make a way
And I will give You all my praise
My seasons change, You stay the same
You’re the God of all my days
In my worry, God You are my stillness
In my searching, God You are my answers
In my blindness, God You are my vision
In my bondage, God You are my freedom
In my weakness, God You are my power
You’re the reason that I sing
‘Cause You’re the God of all my days
In my blindness, God You are my vision
And in my bondage, God You are my freedom
All my days” God of all my days by Casting Crowns
It is so easy to acknowledge that God is Sovereign when prayers are being answered but so hard to believe it when everything around you seems to be falling apart. Also, in the mundane of our days- in our waking up, showering, having breakfast, and going to our day-to-day responsibilities; do we still know that God is Sovereign? I am so thankful for fellow believers in the Word of God who I can very much relate to.
“Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.” Genesis 16:1-2
The chapter before, in Genesis 15 the Lord had promised Abram his own very son, an heir.
“And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then He said to him, “so shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:4-6
One definition that I like of Sovereignty is: supreme excellence, supreme power and authority.
God is altogether supreme in excellency, power, and authority. The Bible says that there is no word of His that ever falls on the ground unaccomplished.
God does not call back His words… (Jeremiah 31:2)
Last year I took a step of obedience toward God and the season that followed felt so barren in my eyes. But thank God that my life is not determined by what I feel but what His word says. When I stumbled across Psalm 37:23, by the grace of God this verse came alive to me. I realized that though my season feel barren, my steps are indeed ordered by the Lord. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.” The beauty of this verse is that God not only orders my days but each step I take as well. God orders my moments, He orders each breath I take.
Charles H. Spurgeon writes the below on Psalm 37:23
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. All his course of life is graciously ordained, and in lovingkindness all is fixed, settled, and maintained. No reckless fate, no fickle chance rules us; our every step is the subject of divine decree. He delights in his way. As parents are pleased with the tottering footsteps of their babes. All that concerns a saint is interesting to his heavenly Father. God loves to view the holy strivings of a soul pressing forward to the skies. In the trials and the joys of the faithful, Jesus has fellowship with them, and delights to be their sympathizing companion.”
If God orders each step I take, isn’t every ground I step on holy ground and shouldn’t I take off my shoes? Exodus 3:5
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears. I am Your servant, grant me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies. Incline my heart to the words of Your mouth: let Your speech distill as the dew. The children of Israel in times past said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
Not so, Lord, not so, I beseech You: but rather with the prophet Samuel, I humbly and earnestly entreat, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.” Let not Moses speak with me, nor any of the prophets, but rather You speak, O Lord God, the inspirer and enlightener of all the prophets; for You alone without them can instruct me, but them without You can profit nothing. They indeed utter words, but they cannot give the Spirit. Most beautifully do they speak, but if You are silent, they will not inflame the heart. They teach the letter, but You open the sense: they bring forth mysteries, but You unlock the meaning of sealed things. They declare Your commandments, but You help us fulfill them. They point out the way, but You give strength to walk in it. They work outwardly only, but You instruct and enlighten the heart. They water, but You give the increase. They cry aloud in words, but You impart understanding. Let not Moses therefore speak with me, but You, O Lord my God, the everlasting truth; lest I die, and prove unfruitful, if I be only warned outwardly, and not inflamed within: lest it turn to my condemnation,- the word heard and not fulfilled, known and not loved, believed and not observed. Speak therefore, Lord, for Your servant hears; for You have the words of eternal life. Speak with me, to the comfort, however imperfect, of my soul, and to the amendment of my whole life, and to Your praise and glory and honor everlasting.” Thomas à Kempis
In Jesus’ name, Amen!
